Professors,
Community Leaders Discuss Recall
Stanford In Government (SIG), a student group that promotes political
involvement on campus, held an informational panel of Stanford professors and
Hoover fellows on the California Recall on Monday, September 29th. The panel,
which was entitled "Recall-ifornia," was designed to inform students
about the recall and to allow students to question their professors on what
consequences the recall has for California and democracy in general...Full

Students Say No to Recall, Prop 54
Latest polls show that a majority of Californians support the
recall of besieged governor Gray Davis and highly favor actor, businessman,
and philanthropist Arnold Schwarzenegger. However, Stanford students' opinions
differ substantially from that of the rest of California, reflecting disconnect
between campus viewpoints and those of the mainstream...Full

Democracy
In Action
The election to recall and possibly replace California Governor
Gray Davis is definitely this year's three-handed monkey of American politics.
It's definitely a rare animal, as only the second recall election of a state
governor in American history. There's no doubt that it's somewhat of a circus
act as well: 135 candidates for governor, including a porn star, a sumo wrestler,
Bob Dole (not the former senator), and, of course, Ah-nold "Total Recall" Schwarzenegger.

Republican
Party's Splitting Headache
The Republican Party in California has long suffered from an identity
crisis. Should Republicans in the Golden State stand firm upon the solid conservative
principles which have guided the party for decades, or should the GOP compromise
its core values to reach out to moderates and swing voters? This very question
continues to plague the Republican Party in California today, causing a deep
rift that has led to complete Democrat control of the state government. ....Full

McClintock
Conservatism
When the list of candidates to replace Governor Gray Davis was
finalized no one predicted that such a great amount of the attention would focus
on two Republicans vying for the party's backing. But as the frontrunners emerged,
so did the divide in the Republican Party's support for its candidates. ....Full

Bustamante:
Could He Be Worse than Davis?
Cruz Bustamante is the ultimate political hack. Unfortuantely
for California, he isn't even a good political hack. Bustamante served in the
Assembly, as Speaker of the Assembly, and then was elected to serve a Lieutenant
Governor for Gray Davis. Since California does not run on a combined ticket
for Governor and Lieutenant Governor, there is a certain degree of enmity between
Gray Davis and Cruz Bustamante. ....Full

Davis' Failures
Led to the Recall
Between the court challenges over the election date, the circus
of candidates, and the partisan bickering, it's easy to forget the central issue
of this recall: Gray Davis. California's first ever recall only comes as a response
to the uniform dissatisfaction with Davis's performance. ....Full

Will Arnold
Clean House in Recall Election?
Arnold Schwarzenegger is the Terminator, a former Mr. Universe,
and now, a candidate for California Governor. Running as a moderate Republican,
Schwarzenegger is considered to be the primary Republican candidate for Governor,
and competes with Lt. Governor Cruz Bustamante and Republican challenger State
Senator Tom McClintock for the top spot in opinion polls. ....Full
